Teignbridge Liberal Democrats leading the way in providing new council homes

Lib Dem Led Teignbridge District Council has approved and financed the Teignbridge 100 programme to deliver new council homes for rent at their annual budget meeting this week.

Teignbridge has a housing list of some 1000 households. Each year around 400 households are found new homes, and as new households find themselves in need, the list stays at around the same level of 1000 households.

Not only are the new homes at affordable rent, they are being built to high environmental and energy efficient standards - modern eco homes on redevelopment sites, helping to tackle climate change and our carbon footprint.

Teignbridge 100 has already started, with homes now being built in Drake Road and East Street in Newton Abbot. More will follow in locations in our towns and villages across Teignbridge, often on sites that have long awaited development.

A pipeline of 100 potential dwellings has been identified and the council aims to deliver at least 25 new homes each year. As sites are being built, Teignbridge District Council will be topping up the pipeline with new locations suitable for small numbers of new rented homes. Starting small ensures that Teignbridge can prove the process and build up a supply.

Cllr Martin Wrigley, Lib Dem Portfolio Holder for Housing on Teignbridge District Council, said:

"To me this shows that we can deliver more new affordable homes in a new way. Delivering new affordable homes through big developers being required to contribute a small percentage of each site just isn't enough for local need - and so we have created a programme to deliver extra, much needed homes for local people.

"I'm proud to be helping to deliver much needed new council homes. This was a key pledge of the Liberal Democrat administration and we are delivering for the people of Teignbridge."
