Lib Dem membership in Plymouth doubles since referendum
The Liberal Democrats in Plymouth have seen a surge in new members over the last eleven months and especially in the past two weeks.
New member Connor Clarke said: "I joined the Lib Dems because they are unashamed in pro-EU, tolerant and internationalist outward-looking politics. Whilst Tories push for a Hard Brexit and Labour captiulate to it, only the Lib Dems can offer the effective opposition this country needs."
It comes as the Liberal Democrats reach their highest ever membership nationally, with over 101,768 members. Across the country 14,000 new members have joined the Liberal Democrats in the two weeks since the General Election was announced and over 50,000 members have joined since last year's EU referendum. Chair of Plymouth Liberal Democrats Hugh Janes said: "More and more people in Plymouth are joining the Liberal Democrats as they see we are the only major UK party standing up against a hard Brexit and the only party providing a decent opposition to this Conservative government. We are going into this election bigger than ever before, with a clear message and a growing sense of momentum. Communities here deserve representatives who will fight against cuts to our schools, NHS and social care services."
Well over 100 people have joined the party in Plymouth since last June's referendum. Bruce said "the Lib Dems stand up for the values I hold most dear and they represent the best political option for creating the kind of fairer, more caring and outward looking Britain I want my family to live in".
