Exeter Lib Dems have launched their manifesto

Exeter Liberal Democrats have today launched their manifesto and slate of candidates for the 6th May city elections delayed from 2020.

Working alongside their partners in the progressive Group on the City Council the group aims to take over as the leading opposition group on the council after these elections.

The Conservative group on the council has failed to offer any opposition to the Labour administration or challenge its policies. Since its formation in 2019 the Progressive Group have not only challenged the Labour administrations direction, but have also put forward an alternative budget and placed motions before council. Liberal Democrats also ensured that the work of the council during the pandemic was subject to public scrutiny.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Kevin Mitchell, Leader of the Progressive Group on the council said:

"The people of Exeter don't want a one-party state they want a council that represents a variety of opinions and one that consults and listens to the variety of communities that make up contemporary Exeter.

"In six wards across the city the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party in Exeter have agreed to stand aside for each. The Chair of Exeter Liberal Democrats, Cllr Michael Mitchell stressed that the agreement offered the voters of Exeter the opportunity to ensure that there is effective opposition on the council."

"The Liberal Democrat manifesto entitled ' A Better Tomorrow' develops a range of policy ideas for the city based on three themes;' Investing in all of Exeter',' A Green and Healthy city' and thirdly 'An open, democratic and accountable council."

The Liberal Democrats want a more local community based approached across the city to ensure that no part of Exeter is left behind or forgotten. They would introduce a self-financing Housing Charter mark scheme for the rented sector in Exeter ensuring high standards. Public transport within the grater Exeter area need to become affordable if we are to cut down on the car dependant culture.

The Liberal Democrats are concerned that under Labour the council has created too many non-accountable bodies making decisions about the future of the City. Liberal Democrats demand openness, transparency and accountable in all matters relating to the future of the city.
