Sarah Martin
Candidate for Plymouth Moor View
Sarah was born and raised in South Devon. She lived abroad for ten years before returning to live in Plymouth and now lives a stone’s throw from Plymouth, in Saltash with her two children. She is on her second term as a Saltash Town Councillor.
She is a keen activist on the Safe38 campaign group in her patch, and also the Tamar Toll Action Group working to abolish tolls on the Tamar Crossings. She is also acting media advisor to both.
Her background is in Marketing, Media and Communications, working now as a local reporter for a Cornish newspaper while running her own PR company from home. She previously worked for many years as a Communications Officer for the NHS at Derriford, and Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. She stood for election in Plymouth Moor View in 2019 and is standing again this time as she feels strongly that Plymouth has been let down by the Tories.
“Back in 2019, I sat in a hustings against Johnny Mercer and I told him nurses were using foodbanks. He scoffed at my comment and told me it was nonsense. Now, five years later, not only are nurses using food banks, great swathes of the population rely on food banks and surplus food projects to feed their families.
“We are all dealing with a cost of living crisis and energy prices hikes unlike any we’ve seen over a very long period of time.
“The NHS and its workforce is depleted and many are demoralised, lacking in funding and any prospect of change. Residents on both sides of the Tamar are being failed as waiting lists match the long queues of ambulances that sit outside A&E, and the patients are given ‘corridor care’ - a term invented for the most undignified level of care you can get in hospitals that don’t have enough beds or wards, or staff to man them.
“Fifteen years of Tory rule has depleted the country. It’s time for a different approach; the Liberal Democrats can offer one that is focused on restoring services that have been failed by Conservative rule, and putting people, not profits, back at the heart of everything they do.”
